Septic Arthritis Definition

Septic arthritis is caused by bacterial infection of the joint that results in damage, severe pain, and swelling. Bacteria most often target the knee, though the hip, ankle, wrist, elbow, or shoulder can also be affected.
Young children and the elderly are most susceptible to septic arthritis, but prompt treatment of symptoms usually facilitates a full recovery.
