Omega-3 Fatty Acids Definition

Also known as N-3 fatty acids, Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients in a healthy diet. Seafood in general has the highest concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids, although some plants and legumes also contain the nutrient. Omega-3 fatty acids can also be taken in the form of a pill supplement.

Research suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that balance the inflammatory properties of Omega-6 fatty acids, another essential nutrient. This has been shown in some studies to be effective in reducing joint pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who regularly take Omega-3 fatty acid supplements. It is important to note that the symptom relief that may result from taking Omega-3 fatty acids supplements does not cure the arthritis or repair the underlying cause of joint pain.

Additional research is needed for the efficacy of Omega-3 fatty acids in the relief of osteoarthritis joint pain symptoms.
