Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Sleep apnea is treatable. Left untreated, sleep apnea is associated with a type of arthritis called gout. It is also associated with an increased risk for a heart attack, glaucoma, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive and behavioral disorders.
