Tenderness and pain on the outside of the hip joint may be a symptom of trochanteric bursitis, a condition involving the inflammation of the trochanteric bursa of the hip. The trochanteric bursa is located between the outer top of the thighbone and the surrounding muscles and tendons.
Trochanteric bursitis and iliopsoas bursitis are the two most common types of hip bursitis. Although symptoms differ between the two conditions, treatments for hip bursitis are generally similar, and often involve activity modification and physical therapy. Joint aspiration and surgical options are considered for cases of septic bursitis.
