Hi, I'm Natalie here with Veritas Health to give you guys some information on using ice therapy for knee arthritis pain relief. Ice can be really helpful at decreasing inflammation, causing vasoconstriction or shrinking of blood vessels to reduce swelling, inflammation, and can also help temporarily reduce pain.
I recommend using ice therapy after you exercise or any strenuous daily activities to help reduce pain. I find that people are usually more comfortable if they use heat before they do exercise or activities. If you're someone who finds that ice is the most beneficial thing, you can use that both pre and post exercise as well.
When using ice packs, you have several different options. You can use an instant cold pack that you can find at your local pharmacy. These can often be applied directly on the skin if that's what the label indicates. You can use a gel pack that you can put in your freezer. These are helpful because they really can conform to the area that you want it on. If you are placing it directly on your skin, though, without any clothes between, I would recommend using a towel just so there's not direct skin contact. You can also use a homemade ice gel pack, or if you don't have this on hand, you can use a bag of frozen peas or frozen vegetables. With this, I would also use a towel or some thick clothing beneath so it's not applied directly to the skin.
When using ice therapy, I would recommend using for about ten minutes and working yourself up to about 20 minutes as needed. I would not exceed 20 minutes as this can increase the chances of skin damage. Be mindful of any redness or signs of irritation as you're using the ice.
